Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences growing in power within the city.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of heroes who will separate from the central cast to begin their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per the DM, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to proceed after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, striking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and escaped to a secure base in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan knows the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as prominent individuals in the powerful family could assist the party enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter vowed a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control the setting for a multiple motives, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The healer turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by House Halovar.

This leaves them few options but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

According to the recent installment’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party will be absent next week, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Questers and Strategists parties.

Viewers can expect finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
