European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
