Former FBI Director James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Charges of Lying US Legislators
Former FBI head James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a legislative process.
The former director's legal representative filed the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the case terminated for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of former President Trump, was being targeted.
The former director was charged shortly after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to proceed against him.
Judicial Process
During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they intended to file multiple motions to dismiss the case before a court case, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.
The former director's legal matter was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under influence from the former president after his probe into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.
Legal Setting
James Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration dismissed.
Upon hearing to the judge read his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the court.
Historical Information
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as president. At the time, he was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
While in office, Mr Comey caused a counter-response from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were not filed, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
Government attorneys allege Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he misled the legislative body by stating he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to leak to media organizations information about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Personal Comments
Through a recording the former director published to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".
"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "So let's have a court case."
These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump published on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
