Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track right in his path

The concerning event happened on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the situation

"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and made ready to enter the track and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"

"We are still investigating what transpired after that point"
