Oxford Union Future Leader Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Comments
The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.
Society announcements showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, the student asserted that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
