The UK Foreign Office has placed 11 new destinations to its public alert list regarding the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only recently, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after a number of notable incidents like the tragic demise of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Authorities' Advice for Travellers

Government representative a senior official stated that every traveler should know the signs of methanol toxicity.

"While consuming alcohol abroad, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official advised.

"Should anything feels off, like a hangover that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."

The complete register of nations noted as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
