Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
